theatrical design

Tommy Smith’s taut, brutal play examines the relationships within a twisted love triangle as the characters explore repressed emotion and sexual deviancy. My design approach sought to emphasize the expansion and contraction of the characters’ worlds through a restricted color palette of warm and cool whites, intense contrast, and harsh angles. The Fringe environment placed further limitations on the design. Because of the general nature of the venue’s rep plot, we opted to build all of the lighting for the show into four columns which, in addition to serving as powerful spatial anchors, provided the low sidelight so integral to the stark world of the play and became light objects in their own right. The implementation of the design also made almost exclusive use of non-theatrical fixtures, instead using a range of incandescent and CFL light sources including bug-lites, plant grow lamps, full spectrum light bulbs and specific PAR38 flood lamps. Each scene was characterized by a narrow color palette and varying degrees of contrast and shadow. The cuing structure comprised a series of staccato transitions mimicking film cuts.
