Brett Elliott’s adaptation of this Shakespeare classic sets it in Spain in the late 15th century, enriching the Montague-Capulet conflict by exploring the historical tension between the Muslim and Catholic communities as Spain transitioned out of Moorish rule. My approach treated the play in a long arc, underpainting a restrained palette with rich, saturated color and slowly subtracting it as the drama unfolds. The first act employs rich ambers and pinks underneath more understated naturalistic colors, slowly subtracting blue to give rise to charged reds and alienating greens wthin the second act. The composition also becomes more charged and angular as the story develops, favoring lower angles, longer shadows and starker contrast.
