theatrical design

Matthew Burgos’s imaginative retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet re-conceives the story through the eyes of the two lovers as their fates are recounted and manipulated by “a ghostly father,” who encompasses most of the other roles within the piece. The play was structured as a series of amorphous vignettes and the characters’ helplessness was conveyed through an oppressively narrow color palette, long shadows and an almost ritualistic approach to cuing structure.  Both color and angle were used motivically throughout.
