theatrical design

Matthew Burgos’ new work, After the Autumn, is a journey deep into the mind of a madman. The fluidity of the play’s temporal structure and the director’s highly stylized, almost ritualistic blocking led me to approach the work as I might light a dance piece. The use of low sidelight allowed the actors to almost float in space as the world around them grows progressively confusing. Strong angles lend the piece a noir quality, and the cold monochromatic color palette plays against a powerful cyc in creating an unnerving psychological space.
